CLIMATE CHANGE

Future trends in climate are of vital importance to New
Zealand viticulturists. In view of the current confusion about
claims that emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) will increase
temperatures to a catastrophic extent, and the publicity
given to the recent Summary for Policymakers issued by the
UN's Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), in
advance of the main report due for release in May, we asked
Dr Alan Limmer, Stonecroft Wines, for his summary of what
current climate science tells us.

Allan Cheesman, 57, is one of the most
highly respected figures in the British wine trade. For
30 years, he was influential in the buying of wines
for Sainsbury's supermarket chain, retiring in late
2002 as the company's director of wine. He is now an
independent consultant, with a number of directorships
in the wine trade and industry organisations.
